Description
A Brief History –
The buildings, records and traditions of Awadh were always Nawabi and still remains “Nawabi”. Historians, depicting a dynasty which began with the first great Nawab Wazir Saadat Ali Khan, Burhan-ul-Mulk and ended with the unhappy King/Nawab Wajid Ali Shah may see In Its record only the story of its decline. It comes under the ambit of the Tehzeeb that Lucknow is known for that we pay respect and attention to the Monuments, Kothis, Palaces, and all that unfolds the rich history of the City of Lucknow. Lucknow has been fortunate enough to be chosen for the construction of majestic Kothis and other monuments that have won glory, fame and recognition all over the world. The artist may find in its buildings much that is artificial and even extravagant, but it is all in character that it never loses a strong human interest. From Asaf-ud-daula to Wajid Ali Shah all were fond of great architectural projects. That is why we find a number of majestic Nawabi buildings which includes Mosques, Imambaras, Forts, Palaces, Baradaries, Gardens, Baolis and many more. These monuments depict the fusion of cultural synthesis in architectural style. They are a melange of Indian, Persian, Mughal, and European style of architecture. Here I have tried to give a brief history of few prominent palaces and Kothis of Awadh under the Nawabi Era in Lucknow. They could justifiably claim to have been among their most interesting edifices. For not only were they sumptuous and costly, but their plan and their elevations were treated with an almost endless variety over the years. The early Nawabi palaces were influenced by the Mughal style of architecture and by other important patrons in northern India during 17 century. In 18″ century they were inspired from European plans and styles. Thus the Nawabi palaces erected in the 19″ century became
an incredible example of an unfamiliar combination of Indian, Mughal and European ideas.
