Description

In this third edition besides few corrections, additions and overall refinement of the structural, diagrammatic and figurative illustrations, ‘Study Questions’ are placed at the end each chapter to help as good rehearsal of the concepts.

The book covers the essential basics of the Group Theory that are required for all sections of chemistry and emphasizes the necessity of this theory to understand the theoretical and applied aspects of Molecular Spectroscopy. The material in this book is presented for a first and final year postgraduate level students of Indian universities and the subject matter covered in this book forms an essential part of one or two papers. This text is the result of a long felt need for developing certain novel techniques for teaching this course. ‘No more nightmares of group theory and spectroscopy!’ – is the ultimate purpose of this book. A ‘Window-vision’ has been provided in the book while presenting most of the chapters and at times a pedagogical approach has been employed.

(1974) and PhD (1980) degrees from Osmania University, he served on the faculty of the university continuously as an Assistant Professor (1980), an Associate Professor (1984) and a Professor (1992) till his superannuation in June 2011. During his stint in teaching he visited United States for a postdoctoral stint (1988-90) and worked as a Research Associate at the Department of Chemistry, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OHIO. He has a vast teaching experience of over 31 years and has a unique distinction of delivering several popular and extension lectures as a Resource Person at several Workshops, Refresher Courses and Orientation Programmes organized by many colleges, universities and research centers all over India, particularly on the topics related to ‘Symmetry, Group Theory and Spectroscopy’. He was recipient of the coveted ‘Best Teacher Award’ for the year 2007 from the State Government. He served as the First and Founder Director of University Foreign Relations Office (UFRO, 1999-2004), an exclusive single-window International Office of Osmania University. He later served as the Principal, University College of Science (2005-09) and the Head, Department of Chemistry, Osmania University (2009-11). After superannuation, he served as the Vice-Chancellor, Satavahana University, TS (2012-2015) and also as In-charge Vice-Chancellor for both Kakatiya University and Telangana University. His main research interests are in Biocoordination Chemistry, particularly modeling of enzymes such as Carboxypeptidase-A (CPA) and peptidyl-Alpha-amidating monooxygenase (PMA). Design, synthesis and characterization of polyfunctional ligands of biological significance and their platinum group metal complexes as anti-cancer drugs have also been the other major areas of his research. He was the recipient of major research grants from DST. He has published 25 research articles in national and international journals and has so far authored six books.
