Description

Veda Vyasa wrote Shrimad Bhagavata after he had finished composing the Mahabharata. It is in the ninth Canto(Navama Skandha) of Bhagavata that some of the interesting anecdotes are included. These anecdotes retold here bring to light a complex web of human characters, their situations and emotions. The subtle development of the human element makes these characters, their motivation and circumstances, relevant to all times. The attempt here, the translator says is to give the characters and situations in these tales a habitation and a name so that they get a recognisable validity in to-day’s world.

The Bh gavata Pur a (ca. 9th-13th c. AD, Devan gar : ) (also known as r mad Bh gavatam, or Bh gavata) is one of the “Maha” Puranic texts of Hindu literature, with its primary focus on bhakti (devotion) to the incarnations of Vishnu, particularly Krishna. The Sanskrit text comprises twelve skandas (cantos or books) and some 18,000 verses. The Bh gavata includes many stories well known in Hindu tradition, including the various avatars of Vishnu and the life of Krishna. It was the first Purana to be translated into a European language, with three French translations between 1840 and 1857. Assigning a date for any Purana is problematical, since they are often developed by generations of storytellers. The Bh gavata itself, along with Hindu tradition, gives ancient origins for the story, with authorship credited to Veda Vyasa. Most modern scholars date the extant version to the ninth or tenth century CE. The intense and personal bhakti described in the Bh gavata is directed toward Krishna as God in human form. The tenth book (or canto), which is dedicated to Krishna, takes up about one quarter of the entire Bh gavata. It includes the most comprehensive collection of stories about the life of Krishna, showing him in all the stages and conditions of human life. It also includes instruction in the practice of bhakti, an analysis of bhakti, and descriptions of the different types of bhakti. The Bh gavata takes the form of a story recounting Vyasa’s work being recited for the first time by his son uka to the dying King Parikshit, who owes his life to Krishna. As Parikshit longs to hear of Krishna before he dies, uka recites the Bh gavata to him over the course of seven days. –Wikipedia
