This book is a collection of short stories, including the popular work of Rabindranath Tagore, Kabuliwala. Kabuliwala is a touching story of a father’s love for his child who is away from him, and how he shows the same love for another child who reminds him of his own.
Summary of the Book
The story is about a seller of dry fruits who is originally from Afghanistan. He comes to Calcutta, a long way from home, to sell his merchandise. The middle-aged man misses his young daughter, Amina, terribly. When he meets Mini, he grows fond of her as she reminds him of Amina. In an attempt to make some money, the kabuliwala sells all of his goods on credit. However, when he goes to collect his money, a customer of his starts to abuse him and, during the fight that ensues, the kabuliwala gets angry and stabs the man. As a result, he is sent to prison for ten years, and is not able to get back to his hometown till he ends his term. Ten years later, Rehman is out of prison and decides to visit Mini. However, she does not recognize him. This disheartens him as he is afraid his daughter may not recognize him too. About Rabindranath Tagore
Rabindranath Tagore was a man who was a master in several fields. He revived Bengali literature and music in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He was the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in the year 1913. He introduced new prose and verse forms, and the use of colloquial language in Bengali literature.
